Gündoğdu, Side: What the Resort District Is Like

Gündoğdu is a resort district on the coast at Side, in the Manavgat area of Antalya province. That makes it a hotel-based base beside the old town rather than a separate destination. This guide explains the character of the area, how it relates to the ruins and harbour, and how to plan a stay without a car.

What and where Gündoğdu is

Gündoğdu sits on the coast at Side, in the Manavgat area of Antalya province. The old town is built on a small peninsula, with the monumental gate of Vespasian, the colonnaded streets, the agora and the great theatre packed into the lanes. For a wider comparison of the resort areas around Side, see the Side Neighbourhoods: 4 Area Guides.

The character of the area and who it suits

Gündoğdu is a resort-district base, and the sort of place travellers use for a pool, easy transfers and organised outings rather than for stepping straight into old-town lanes or a working harbour. That suits families and couples who want a calm base and who save the ruins and harbour for planned trips. If you want to step out of your room into old-town lanes, late-night cafés or a working harbour, compare Kumköy: The Resort District Beside Side and Evrenseki, Side for the alternatives along the same coast.

How Gündoğdu relates to Side old town

Side old town is a compact, walkable place where a relaxed day can take in the theatre, agora, Side Museum and the Temple of Apollo without rushing. The Temple of Apollo, with its Roman columns by the water, is the signature view at sunset. Most travellers allow a full day for the old town when they visit from Gündoğdu.

Much of the ancient city is open-air and woven into the streets of the modern old town, so you can walk freely through it. Side Museum, housed in a restored Roman bath inside the ancient city, has a separate entrance ticket, and some sites have their own seasonal visiting hours. In the town, the theatre blends Hellenistic design with Roman vaulted construction. Check the official museum pages for current tickets, and remember that paths through the ruins are uneven underfoot.

Getting to Gündoğdu by road

Gündoğdu is reached by road. The coastal approach from Antalya runs east through Manavgat, past the side roads that climb into the villages beside Köprülü Canyon National Park. For the national park, the official route heads from the coast through Taşağıl and Beşkonak. If you plan on the national park, the rafting and camping along the Köprü River are the main draws.

One route estimate puts the drive from Antalya at about 42 minutes by car over 61.5 km. Road transport in Turkey commonly runs by bus and dolmuş along the coast road, but confirm departure points and times locally before relying on them, because they change with the season. Gündoğdu works as a base without a car because boat trips and excursions pick up from Side, Manavgat and the nearby resorts, with the time confirmed when you book.

Boat trips and excursions with pick-up

Boat trips leave from Side and the surrounding resorts, and the standard group tours listed include transfer and lunch, with drinks included on some sailings. Routes cover the local coast, Manavgat waterfall, Suluada island and Green Lake. Private yachts and half-day options are also offered. For non-boat outings such as the national park, plan around the road transfer rather than a fixed timetable.

Within reach further along the coast

The neighbouring resort districts of Kumköy and Evrenseki sit on the same stretch, with access to Side. If you want a different base, compare Çolaklı: a resort strip near Side and what it offers. A car is useful for the inland sites: Köprülü Canyon National Park lies 49 km northeast of Antalya in the Manavgat district, its valley walls reaching as high as 100 m and running 14 km, which the park authority describes as the longest canyon in Türkiye. Selge, 12 km away, has the remains of a theatre, agora, temples of Zeus and Artemis, and cisterns. Side's ancient sites are covered in more detail in the Things to Do in Side, Turkey.

Gündoğdu is a resort-district base, and the main eating is in the place you stay. For a wider choice of cafés and lanes, plan an evening in Side old town, where the lanes have plenty of shaded places to eat. Ask at your hotel reception for what is within walking distance, and check current prices and opening times before you set out.

Is Gündoğdu the right base for you?

Choose Gündoğdu if you want quiet resort comfort, a pool and organised pick-ups, and you are happy to travel to Side's ruins and the harbour as outings. Skip it if you want to walk out of your door into an old town, in which case compare the Side Neighbourhoods and the coast's other resort districts. Wherever you stay, the ancient city, the museum and the boat trips are the reason most travellers come.
