Bodrum neighbourhoods: where to base yourself on the peninsula

Bodrum's west-coast neighbourhoods sit at noticeably different distances from the centre, and that spread shapes the choice. Bitez lies about 7 km west of Bodrum, Gümüşlük sits further out on the western peninsula, and Yalıkavak carries the heaviest search interest of the four but asks for more than one visit to know. Where you sleep decides how much of each day goes to transport.

Each place rewards a particular kind of traveller. Bitez's shallow bay suits families and non-swimmers, with lifeguarded municipal beaches and a village centre of restaurants and bars; its sandy stretch is only 60 metres, so it fills early in July and August. Ortakent also divides in two, an inland village and the sandy Yahşi beachfront of pensions and motels, and works for families and couples who swim, provided you plan transport for the inland market and sights.

Gümüşlük, built over ancient Myndos, suits slow days, seafood and families; you can wade toward Tavşan Adası, though the crossing is sometimes closed for archaeological work. Yalıkavak pairs a polished marina of restaurants and shops with an old village and harbour behind it, with Sandima, Geriş and the windmills uphill, so taxis or minibuses are part of the plan.

Allow half a day for Bitez, Gümüşlük or Ortakent, and at least two half-days for Yalıkavak.

Matching the bay to your trip

Travelling with young children or non-swimmers? Bitez's lifeguarded municipal sand and shallow bay are the obvious fit, though arrive early in high summer. Families and couples who swim should weigh Ortakent, basing by the Yahşi sand for swimming and boat days but budgeting transport for the inland village. For slow days and seafood, Gümüşlük's former fishing village sets the pace. Couples and families wanting a full base will find Yalıkavak's marina and old village need at least two half-days, with taxis or minibuses for the uphill sights. Gümüşlük's wade to Tavşan Adası can close for archaeological work, so check before you count on it.
