Bodrum attractions: planning your first sights in town

Bodrum's sights divide neatly by time rather than by distance. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, reduced to a low podium and column fragments, sits near the harbour and castle and asks only half an hour to an hour, so it slots easily into a morning already given to something else. The Museum of Underwater Archaeology takes the opposite approach: it fills Bodrum Castle, climbing through towers and terraces of amphoras, glass and wreck cargo, and rewards a half day.

The windmills on the ridge between Bodrum town and Gümbet cost nothing at all, and the split view of Bodrum Castle and Gümbet Bay is the reason to go; broken glass near the mills makes closed shoes worthwhile. Myndos Gate, in Eskiçeşme, survives as two andesite towers and a silted moat, with Roman tombs and a mosaic floor about 100 metres further west that most visitors miss.

Pair the Mausoleum with the castle museum while you are in the centre, and save the windmills or the gate for a walk of their own.

  • The towers of Bodrum Castle, home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology: What to See

Inside Bodrum Castle, the museum holds amphoras, glass and cargo from Aegean wrecks, plus two reconstructed ships. It is a climb of cobbles and stairs between towers and terraces, so allow a half day and wear shoes you can walk in.

  • The ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Bodrum.

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: What You Can Still See in Bodrum

Only low podium and column fragments survive of Mausolus's tomb, so allot half an hour to an hour rather than an afternoon. It sits among ordinary streets near the harbour, and reading Pliny's description against the stones is the point.

30-60 minutes · Best for history-minded visitors pairing it with the castle

  • An old stone windmill on the hill above Bodrum.

Bodrum Windmills: How to Visit the Yel Değirmenleri

A line of unrestored stone mills on the ridge above town, reached on foot or by dolmuş towards Gümbet. Come for the split view of Bodrum Castle and Gümbet Bay, not for displays. Closed shoes help: broken glass lies near the mills.

half a day · free entry · Best for walkers wanting hilltop views

  • The ruined towers of the Myndos Gate in Bodrum.

Myndos Gate, Bodrum: Visiting the Ancient City Gate

The western gate of ancient Halicarnassus survives as two andesite towers and a silted moat on the edge of Bodrum. Most people turn back at the towers, missing the Roman tombs with a mosaic floor about 100 metres further west.

Sights that cost nothing in Bodrum

The windmills on the ridge towards Gümbet and Myndos Gate in Eskiçeşme both have free entry, and neither needs booking. Myndos Gate had no ticket booth in 2024 and remains an unfenced, open-access monument.

Give the windmills half a day if you walk the ridge, and an hour to the gate and the Roman tombs beyond it. The castle museum charges admission at its ticket office, so plan your free outings around that spend.
