Manavgat River: Waterfall, Boat Trips and Bazaar Guide
Plan a day on the Manavgat River near Side: the wide waterfall, calm-water cruises to the delta, the Grand Bazaar stop and what a boat trip includes.
On this page
The Manavgat River is best treated as a single relaxed day out from Side or Manavgat: a look at the wide, low waterfall, then a boat cruise down the calm river to the delta where it meets the Mediterranean. The waterfall sits about 3 km north of Manavgat town, close enough to combine with the town and its bazaar in the same outing.
This guide separates the waterfall visit from the river cruise, because they are different experiences sold together on most boat days. It then covers what a typical trip includes, how families and nervous sailors should weigh the calm water, and how transfer distance from Side, Alanya or Belek changes the length of the day.
Where the Manavgat River runs
The river rises in the Taurus Mountains and flows south through Manavgat town before reaching the Mediterranean at Side. The waterfall lies just north of the town centre, so the water you see there is the same channel that carries the cruise boats down to the river mouth.
Manavgat itself is a small town with a bazaar, a mosque and riverside walks, and many visitors pass through it on the way to the coast. Treat the town as the transfer point between the waterfall and the boat jetty rather than a destination in its own right.

The Manavgat Waterfall: wide, low and loud
The waterfall is not a tall cascade. The river is roughly 40 metres wide where it drops about 2 metres over flat rocks, and the volume of water creates the roar and spray that make it worth the stop.
Observation terraces, cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops line the site, with plane trees giving shade over much of the area. Tea gardens near the falls are the obvious place to sit if you have arrived before your boat departs.
The waterfall entrance is not included in the standard boat-trip price, so budget for it separately and check the current fee at the gate on the day. How long you need is short: many visitors spend under an hour on the terraces before moving on.
Getting to the river and waterfall
Dolmuş minibuses run regularly from Manavgat centre towards the waterfall, and the site is well signposted by road with parking for those driving. The riverside route also works on foot or by bike if you are staying in Manavgat town.
From Side, the simplest approach is a boat trip that includes hotel transfer, which removes the need to work out the dolmuş connections yourself. Pickup is arranged by hotel transfer, with the exact time confirmed the day before and varying slightly between hotels.
The river cruise to the delta
The boat follows a wide, slow-moving channel from Manavgat down to the delta where fresh water meets the Mediterranean. There is no ocean swell on a river, so the boat glides rather than pitches, which is the whole appeal for anyone who dislikes open-sea trips.
A swimming stop at the delta is built into the day, along with music and a foam party on deck for the group boats. The trade-off is real: the river gives you no open-sea coves and no dramatic cliff scenery, and the boat is a sociable shared group boat rather than a private charter.
What a boat trip includes
A typical Manavgat river cruise bundles round-trip hotel transfer, the river and delta cruise, lunch served on board and free time at the Grand Bazaar. A guide accompanies the day, and some packages add a soft-drinks option.
Excluded are the waterfall entrance, alcoholic drinks, personal spending and shopping, plus any professional photos or video taken on board. Booking sites such as Excursions list these exclusions before you pay, so read the price-includes list before you book so you know exactly what lunch and the package cover.
For scale, the Manavgat River Cruise sold by Excursions advertised 18 euros per adult with children aged 6 to 12 at 9 euros and under-sixes free. Treat those as historical published figures rather than a current rate, and check the live price on its booking page when you book.

Drinks, photos and bazaar spending on the day
Drinks from the onboard bar are paid separately from the ticket, and the foam party and music are included rather than an add-on. Bring cash for the bazaar and for anything you want from the bar, because spending money is not part of the package.
At least one operator sells a professional photo and video service as a paid extra on the boat, so you can always take your own pictures instead. If a photographer approaches you, it is optional, so decide before the price is quoted rather than afterwards.
Families on the river: life jackets and wet decks
Every boat carries life jackets, including child sizes, and the crew supervises the swimming and foam party in the calmer stretches of the river. Put a jacket on small children near the rails regardless of how flat the water looks.
The deck gets wet and slippery once the foam starts, so keep toddlers within arm's reach and bring a dry change of clothes. Shade on the water is limited in high summer, which makes a hat and sun cream part of the packing rather than an afterthought.
If you get seasick or cannot swim
The river barely moves, so motion sickness is much less of a risk than on a sea excursion, and non-swimmers can stay on deck for the swim stop. The crew advises on where and when it is safe to get in, and a life jacket is available for any in-water time.
Older guests and anyone who avoids open-sea boats are the group this trip suits best. The flip side is the sociable, busy group-boat atmosphere: if you want a quiet private deck, this is not that product.
How long the day runs from Side, Alanya or Belek
Transfer distance drives the length of the day. The Side departure is a full day because the transfer is short, while the Alanya version runs about six hours and the Belek version about seven because the coach covers more ground.
The regional fares published for those departures were 21 euros adult from Side, 43 euros adult from Alanya and 43 euros adult from Belek in the year they were listed, with child rates of 13, 23 and 28 euros respectively. The Alanya and Belek days cost more than the Side day because the transfer covers more ground, so use those as a rough comparison between regions rather than a booking figure, and confirm the live rate with your operator.
One operator advertised an 8.5-hour Manavgat River Cruise with hotel pickup in the Manavgat hotels area, morning departure around 08:45 and payment on the day of the tour. Departure times are set region by region, so confirm your own pickup slot rather than planning around a quoted time.
The Grand Bazaar stop
The bazaar is free time within the day rather than a guided shopping stop, and companies such as Excursions and OWL Tourism describe it as a market visit built into the itinerary. Prices are not part of the package, so bring cash for anything you buy.
The Grand Bazaar in Manavgat runs on Mondays and Thursdays, and boat itineraries do not always align with those days, so ask your operator which day you will be there if the bazaar is the main draw. Otherwise, treat the stop as a chance to stretch your legs and buy fruit or gifts between the boat and the coach.
Oymapınar Dam and the upper river
Oymapınar Dam sits about 12 km to the north of the river, an upper part of the same river system, and the dam is a useful extension if you have a car and want a second viewpoint. Alternatively, a second waterfall above the Oymapınar reservoir can be reached by crossing the reservoir and following the gorge, or viewed from above on a hike.
The Green Canyon reservoir is a separate day out in this area, with boat trips on the water above the dam. If you want both the river day and the reservoir, give them separate days rather than trying to squeeze them into one.
Manavgat beyond the river: nearby ruins and Side
Manavgat sits close to the Greco-Roman sites of the Antalya coast, and summer visitors often pair the river with the ruins around Side. The Temple of Apollo in Side, right by the harbour, makes an easy evening stop after the boat returns.
Inland, the Roman theatre is the best-preserved part of the ancient city of Aspendos, and it is close enough to Manavgat for a half-day add-on by car or tour. The theatre is the reason most people make the detour, and it pairs well with a morning at the waterfall.
Perge, north of Antalya, is a larger site with a colonnaded street and baths, and its finds are displayed in the Antalya Museum. It is a longer drive from Manavgat, so keep it for a separate day rather than bolting it onto the river trip.
Should you book the boat or visit independently?
Book the boat trip if you want the river, the delta swim, lunch and the bazaar handled in one day without sorting out transport yourself. Visit independently if you mainly want the waterfall and the town: a dolmuş from Manavgat centre or a short drive gets you there, and you can leave when you like.
Whichever you choose, confirm the pickup time, the live price and whether the waterfall entrance is included before you commit. The river itself does not change much between seasons, but the tour companies' packages and prices do.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Manavgat Waterfall from Manavgat town centre?
The waterfall is about 3 km north of Manavgat town, close enough for a short dolmuş ride or a drive with parking at the site. Allow under an hour on the terraces before moving on to the town or the boat jetty.
Can you swim in the Manavgat River on a boat trip?
Yes, the standard river cruise includes a swimming stop at the delta where the river meets the Mediterranean. Life jackets are available for anyone who wants one, and the crew supervises the in-water time.
Is the Manavgat river boat trip suitable for young children?
It is one of the calmer boat days on this coast because the river has no swell, and child-sized life jackets are carried on board. The caveats are the wet deck during the foam party and limited shade in high summer, so bring a change of clothes and sun protection.
