Treat an Antalya sunset as a timing problem first. The light lasts far longer in mid-summer than in December, so the hour you leave your hotel shifts far more across the year than the choice of viewpoint does. This guide covers the spots where the view over the water and cliffs works, how the sunset minute moves through the year in Antalya and Side, and how to plan the walk back.

The sun tables let you check the exact minute for your own date rather than carrying a fixed time in your head. Antalya's sunset moves through the year, and the daily tables give the value for each day of the month rather than a single figure for the whole season.

Where to watch the sunset in Antalya: the viewpoints worth the walk

The strongest views in Antalya combine three things: open water to the west, the cliffs that drop to the Mediterranean, and the Taurus Mountains standing behind the city. Look for a high point with a clear line to the sea rather than a street-level café where buildings block the low sun.

Kaleiçi, the old town inside the harbour walls, is the handiest base for a sunset walk. From the streets around the harbour you can climb towards the cliff edge in a few minutes and look back over the rooftops and the water. Use an Antalya map to fix the relationship between the harbour, the cliffs and your hotel before you set out, because the streets bend and dead-end.

If you are spending the afternoon in the old town anyway, the same walk covers the lanes and the light. From inside the harbour walls the lanes run down towards the water, and climbing back up takes only a few minutes. Plan the afternoon around the things to do in Antalya that sit inside the walls, then let the light carry you to the cliff edge.

How Antalya's sunset time shifts through the year

Antalya's sunset does not occur at one fixed hour. Monthly sun tables set out sunrise, sunset and day length for the calendar, with the evening light lasting much longer in summer than in December. Use the September page as a template for how the site works, then switch to the month you are travelling in.

For a late-October trip, look up the exact day rather than assume a summer time. The same tables give day length as well as the sunset minute, which tells you how much usable light you have before the sky goes dark. That matters most if you are walking back to a hotel outside the centre.

Autumn evenings close in faster than July ones, so build in a buffer on either side of the sunset minute rather than cutting it fine. If you are still deciding whether the city earns a stop on your itinerary, our piece on whether Antalya is worth visiting sets out what the city gives you and what it does not.

Why the golden hour runs beyond the sunset itself

The warm light that makes a sunset photo usually starts before the sun touches the water and continues after it has gone. Antalya's cliffs and the Taurus Mountains behind the city frame the evening, and the colour keeps changing after sunset. Arrive for the whole window, not just the minute.

That extra light is also your margin for getting back. If the sky stays bright for a while after the sun has set, you have time to walk down from a cliff path or cross the old town without hurrying. Check the day-length figure for your date so you know how long that margin is.

Getting to a sunset viewpoint and back before dark

Work out the return leg before you leave. A short walk back into Kaleiçi is a different proposition from a headland where the last stretch is unlit. Decide which you are doing while it is still light, and check the route on the Antalya Map so you know where the harbour steps and the main streets connect.

If your hotel sits out along the coast, the tram and local buses are the practical way to reach the centre without hunting for parking at dusk. Our Antalya tram guide explains the lines and where they connect with the old town. Allow extra time for the return trip, because the evening rush overlaps with the sunset window.

Keep the walk itself simple. The harbour is the natural anchor point on the old town side, and the lanes above it lead to the cliffs. Once you know the way down to the water, you can pick your spot on the day rather than following a fixed route.

Sunset over the coast and cliffs: what you are actually looking at

West-facing water gives you the cleanest line to the sunset in Antalya, and the cliffs near the old town put you above the shoreline. Behind the city, the Taurus Mountains are part of the view. That combination of sea, cliff and mountain is what makes an Antalya evening worth planning around.

Do not expect an empty viewpoint. People gather around the coast in the evening to watch the day fade over the water. Arriving early gives you a choice of position and lets you settle before the colour starts, rather than joining a crowd that is already in place.

If the walk to a viewpoint is part of a longer day in the city, combine it with the bazaar and market streets that run through the centre. The Antalya bazaar is the obvious stop for a browse before the evening, and the Antalya market pages list the regular street markets. Both are daytime activities, so plan them before the light changes.

Watching the sunset in Side if you are staying east of Antalya

If you are staying along the coast to the east, Side is a simpler base for an evening on the water than driving into Antalya. The town sits on a peninsula, so the sea is right there as the light goes. Check the Side daily table for the exact sunset minute on your date.

Side's ruins are close to the water, which makes a late-afternoon walk through the theatre and the colonnaded streets easy to combine with the sunset. You are looking at the same Mediterranean light as in Antalya, but with a different foreground of columns and temple stones. The town deserves at least an afternoon, and the sunset is the reason to stay on rather than heading back early.

The trade-off is straightforward. A Side sunset saves you the drive into Antalya, but it puts you in a smaller town with fewer places to eat afterwards. If you want a full evening out, Antalya gives you more choice; if you want the light without a long transfer, Side is the simpler call.

Which sunset plan suits your trip

Start with the clock, not the viewpoint. Look up the exact sunset minute for your date in Antalya or Side, then work out how long it takes to reach your chosen spot and how long you need to get back. A buffer on either side covers most of the surprises.

If you are in the city, base the evening around Kaleiçi and the harbour, and use the Antalya map to plan the return walk. If you are staying east, use Side and stay on after the light fades. Either way, arrive before the sun drops rather than at the sunset minute, and the evening will look after itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is sunset in Antalya in October?

It changes day by day through the month, so check the daily sun table for the exact date you are travelling rather than using a single October figure. Sunset falls earlier by the end of the month than at the start, and day length shortens with it.

Can you see the sunset from Kaleiçi?

The lanes of the old town climb from the harbour towards the cliff edge, which puts you above the shoreline near the water. Walk up early enough to pick a spot and leave yourself light for the way back.

Is sunset better in Antalya or Side?

Both look out over the Mediterranean, and the choice comes down to where you are staying. Antalya gives you the old town and cliffs, while Side puts the ruins beside the water in a smaller setting.

How long after sunset does the light last?

The warm light begins before the sun reaches the water and continues after it has gone, so the best colour often comes a few minutes after the sunset minute. Check the day-length figure for your date to see how much light remains.
